Solve Absolute Value Equations

If a > 0, the solution for |x| = a is either x = a or -x = a.

If a = 0, the solution for |x| = a is x = a, which is x = 0.

Solve for t.

|t| 6 = -5

|t| = 1 Add 6 to both sides

Since t can be either positive or negative, split the equation into two cases.

positive or negative
t = 1

-t=1

The positive case is already solved. t = 1

Solve the negative case.

-t = 1

t = -1 Multiply both sides by -1

The solution is t = 1 or t = -1

Solve for x

|-8x| = 16

Solution: x = or x =
