Line graphs

A Line graph (chart) is a way to summarize series of quantities.

  • The horizontal scale across the bottom and the vertical scale along the side provides information on how much or how many.
  • The points on the graph show the facts.
  • The lines connecting the points give estimates the values between the points.

The following line graph represents the value of Robert's baseball card collection.

  1. How much has the value of Robert's collection increased from January to June? $10.00.
  2. If this trend continues, what would be a reasonable estimate for the value of this collection in July? $132.50

This line graph shows the effect of inflation on the purchasing power of a $100,000 life insurance policy.

After 10 years, the purchasing power of the $100,000 has decreased to approximately $60,000.
